BARF/RAW diet for my cavalier?

I have a cavalier king charles spaniel who was born on 2/8/09

she's a girl.

I was thinking of feeding her raw.

can you tell me a little about the BARF and RAW diet and where I should buy the raw food or some recipes?BARF/RAW diet for my cavalier?
Good for you for trying something healthy for your dog!

I tried raw for our Cavalier but it didn't work out so we stopped. Too much blood and juice was getting all over her and the kids touch her, bite her, kiss her all the time so I thought it was very unsanitary and I don't want my kids getting sick.

BARF diet is quite simple once you figure out what to feed. Most people use a combination of organs, muscle meat, and meaty bones with a little bit of vegetable mush or fruit mush. Some feed a little grain like brown rice but most people don't.

You can usually buy the raw meat very cheap at any butcher shop near you. Because people don't eat things like cow heart, they sell it to you for almost nothing! The meaty bones too.

Hello! I'm actually getting a redbone coonhound pup in September and will feed a raw diet - a chance to practice what I preach!

A raw diet is best because you can control the quality of the food you give your dog. Raw is best because it properly nourishes the body with living enzymes and beneficial bacteria, and will keep your dogs healthy for years to come. And raw is best for the dog's digestive system, which processes raw foods in about 6 hours but will take up to 18 hours to digest kibble, giving it time to ferment and possibly cause bloat.

Canines are carnivores and don't require grains in their diet. Any wild dog will eat muscle and organ meat, bones, and may also consume contents of the rumen. Replicating this diet, often referred to as 'prey model,' really isn't that difficult, though it may seem daunting.

I highly advise you check out the following websites and Yahoo groups:

I know that BARF (Bones and Raw Food) is popular, but after doing research I just don't agree that carnivores eat as much vegetables and fruit that the BARF diet claims they do. Certainly, any dog will forage for food and eat anything remotely edible, including vegetables and fruits, but their system is especially harsh and not designed for the lengthy process of breaking down and conversion of those starches and fiber. Nor is their mouth equipped to grind down those fibrous veggies and fruits to prepare them for digestion.

There are some books on Tom Lonsdale that I haven't been able to get hold of yet, though I believe http://www.amazon.com carries them.

Here is a quick guideline to get you started:

80% muscle meat

10% organ meat

10% raw meaty bones

And these are just that - a guideline. There are many variations, depending on the breed, if it is regularly worked, and the personal belief of the human. And as I've discovered, it is best to not worry about every single morsel at every single meal. Wild canines eat what they can when they can and are as healthy as can be (excluding famine or disease, of course) and you should your dog in the same manner. It's not healthy to try to adhere to a strict dietary law - you can't achieve it and your body, and your dog's body, isn't designed for it.

I hope this is helpful to you, and good luck with your Cavalier - they're awesome dogs : )
Well there are two types of raw diets. The BARF style raw diet and the prey model raw diet.

Starting with BARF, Barf stands for bones and raw food. BARFers believe that dogs are not just carnivorous but omnivorous, thereore in their dogs diet they include raw meaty bones, eggs, pureed vegetables and fruit(which freeze into cubes and feed one per day)and cultured dairy like yogurt and cottage cheese. I personally feed my dog BARF style. I don't have many recipes. I just serve a bowl with an RMB plus veggie puree and yogurt and some missing link.

Prey Mode feeders believe dogs are purely carnivorous and feed their dogs Soley raw meaty bones, organs meat, eggs, and sometimes whole carcasses depending on the owner. For prey model there are no recipes. just throw your dog meat.BARF/RAW diet for my cavalier?
Get her checked out ASAP by a vet who knows about cirari and syringomyelia.

94% of teh cavalirs have the Syringomyelia diseases.

It is where the brain is too big for their skulls. It is hard to diagnose as dogs hide pain they feel as it is seen as a weekness to teh rest of the pack, but they are in agony from headaches, spinal burning sensations. People think breeders have tested the dogs but they don't as they get less money for them (However nice they seem on the outside.)

Visit the Cavalier club website for more information and get her insured ASAP
There is a basic difference in the BARF and RAW.

BARF feeders believe that the dogs need vegetables and other bits and pieces such as yoghurt, cottage cheese etc.

RAW feeders feed literally only raw meat, fish, eggs %26amp; bones.

I cannot advise on quantities as I have rotties, and I certainly don't do any sort of home recipe type of food. they just get their meat as it comes.

There are loads of good sites on raw or join a ckc forum where you can discuss quantities with fellow owners.

Best of luck - and I'm sure you won't look back.BARF/RAW diet for my cavalier?
