I need help with the raw food diet?

i have a 9month old GSD and i wanted to put him on raw foods, but its just way too confusing for me. He weighs over 60lbs now, so how do i know how much to give him? does anyone have any recipes with exact measurements that i can use? (instead of 80% veggies, and 10% meat, 10% grains, as some people like to put it.... i want ozs, lbs, cups ect)

any helps would be great:) thanksI need help with the raw food diet?
I don't raw feed, but I know there is a "raw food" group on YahooGroups that is supposed to be excellent. Try asking there - they have the expertise that we don't.

Add: I never understood the whole "breed" dog foods - is any one breed that different from another that they need a special food?I need help with the raw food diet?
Man why would you even want to go there, life is too busy already, also as you have not done a degree in dog food you are best to leave it to the professionals, I highly recommend Royal Canin, it is the only dog food in the world that have a German Shepard formula, it is amazing food, your GSD will love it. Have a look at their web site.

Hi,

I have my dog on raw diet since last Nov. and I really don't follow the size of the dog by the weight of the food you feed. I guess because my dog stops eating when he's not hungry anymore and he maintain a perfect weight.

To learn from the best of rawfeeders, join the yahoo group called rawfeeding. Ask all your questions there but before you do, read the past posts of other beginners to see if your answer is already posted. By the way, these people are real raw feeder, no veggies or grain, just meat, bones, vit/min supplements, fish oils and thats all that is needed. To find out why the veggies and grains are not needed, ask on the site. I do put alittle bit of veggies with the meat on occasion just because my dog likes it. Trust me this site is really great and the people know what they are talking about, have been rawfeeders forever.

If you feed your dog 80% veggies and 10% meat, I can't imagine their muscle is too great.
"If I remember right" you need to feed him about 2-3% of his body weight daily. If he is active or growing, he may need slightly more than that.

I highly reccommend you search thru the yahoo groups and find some rawfeeding groups. Many of them are about feeding nothing BUT meat.. and do not include veggies in their dog's diets.. if you are looking for a diet that includes veggies, try the BARF feeders groups.

You will most likely find that you're not going to get like an "exact" recipie to use for planning his meals. Variety is the key.. remember a natural diet will not include the exact same things every day.. Mostly meat, and a little bone, organ meats, and veggies. Some feed on 10-day cycles.. meat for 9 days, and a veggie/organ meal for one day.I need help with the raw food diet?
Royal Canine is not the only food with a German shepard formula. Eukanuba also has one. However, both foods aren't half as great as Canidae. I would feed the dog dry food also because I don't see how a pure raw diet is good for thier teeth. However Natures Variety sells a frozen raw diet that you could use on your dog and that also tells you how much to use per day.
Right buy these 2 books by Dr. Ian Billinghurst

#1 Give your dog a bone

#2 Grow your pups with bones.

these 2 books are a MUST for you.

a dog get feed on 70 % raw meaty bones, the rest is fruit, veg, legumes, meats, and offal (heart, liver, kidney)

Further more add 2 per week

plain yoghurt or cottage cheese, salmon oil, whole eggs (brake up shell), pinch of brewers yeast, table spoon of wheat bran, 1 vitamin E oil capsule

You will feed 2% of a dogs body weight.

Your dog is 60 lbs that means you have to feed 1.2 pounds.

That is for an adult dog. If it is a very active dog, cani cross, working in harness et cetera you can go up to 4 % of bodyweight.

Your pup in growing ao I would start feeding it 3 %.

You have to have a balanced diet otherwise your pup will miss out on vital minerals, vitamines and such things and will have skeleten and other health problems later in life.

Very good to feed is chicken wings, chicken necks, carcasses, turkeynecks-wings, lamb bones, porkbones, tribe!! rabbit and all RAW. You cannot just start feeding raw YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOKS!!!

Once you get the hang of it (Iknow it is confusing to start with) it comes all natural.
