I have been reading alot about a raw food diet for dogs. I don't want to feed my dogs commercial pet food any more. I think it is not very good for them. Does anyone feed their dogs homemade dog food. If so, what, how much and what is the recipe. Any good resource on the subject. Thanks.Does anyone make their pets food?
(First, it's "a lot", not "alot". Two words, not one ;-) )
Before you decide to take your dogs off commercial pet food "cold turkey", remember that these foods have been formulated to provide your dog with specific nutrients. For example, dogs require these amino acids:
* arginine
* histidine
* isoleucine
* leucine
* lysine
* methionine
* phenylalanine
* threonine
* tryptophan
* valine
They also require:
Macro-minerals
* Calcium (Ca)
* Phosphorus (P)
* Sodium (Na)
* Chloride (Cl)
* Potassium (K)
* Magnesium (Mg)
and micro-minerals:
* Iron (Fe)
* Zinc (Zn)
* Copper (Cu)
* Manganese (Mn)
* Selenium (Se)
* Iodine (I)
Deficiencies in any of these can cause a number of health problems, or even death.
If you can ensure making homemade food with the correct proportions of these essential nutrients - more power to you; however, most peoples' homes aren't equipped with the instruments necessary to measure these.
You're better off feeding your dogs the commercially available kibble that's been formulated and tested to conform to known and proven standards of canine nutrition.Does anyone make their pets food?
no we dont just buy it.
My family has a West Siberian Liaka, and regular dog food just don't cut it, if ya' know what I mean. We make him dog food that is: rice, meat of your choice, and carrots. This has worked really well for him, and so I hope that it would work well for you, too.Does anyone make their pets food?
I have made homemade food for my dogs. I use 1 lb of ground beef or turkey and four cups of rice. cook the meat first then add 8 cups of water bring to boil then add rice after about 10 minutes add meat and stir in. continue to cook until most of water is gone.This helps them with their digestive system.
As my vet explained it when my dog went to Puppy School- The companies that make pet food spend A LOT of money each year researching what pets need and developing foods to meet those needs. How would a regular person with little to no knowledge of the exact nutrients that their pet needs be able to match that?
You need to give your pet at least SOME commercial food, if you don't like the food that you buy from the supermarket then go to your local vet or petshop and buy a premium brand such as Iiams, Eukanuba or Science Diet which are the absolute best thing for your animal as far as their health is concerned. If you do not intend to do that and are absolutely set on feeding a natural diet then you really need to speak to your vet about it to devise a meal plan that will provide your dog with everything he needs.Does anyone make their pets food?
Commercial brand foods have lots of by-products, some use corn as first ingredient, BHA %26amp; BHT to keep the food from going rancid and overall are just plain disgusting. I could go on and on about rendering and how roadkill, grease vats are picked up from restaurants and sprayed on these foods to intice the dogs to eat. However, to answer your question, there are BARF recipes on the net, but I would find a natural food like Flint River Ranch, Wellness and a few others. Do a research by typing in "what's really in pet food" and you will see what I'm talking about. For more info. on FRR, contact me at housepaws@bellsouth.net
