Question about dog food ingredient?

3 cups of whole wheat flour

3 cups of rolled oats

2 tsp. of bone meal

2 cups of dry milk

3 cups of cooked brown or wild rice

4 raw eggs

1 cup of bacon grease or lard, melted

3 cups of water, broth, gravy, milk, meat juices or meat drippings

1 cup of cooked chopped carrots

1 cup of cooked chopped peas

2 to 4 cups of ground or shredded fat, fish or meat (optional)

Plastic bags

Plastic containers with lids

Okay, this is my dog food recipe that I want to make. The only thing is, what can I replace the lard\bacon fat with that is healthier? What would this ingredient be?Question about dog food ingredient?
I thought at first it was a dog biscuit recipe. I don't understand the whole wheat flour as a dog food ingredient. Oats aren't bad, but shouldn't be the main part of the mixture along with rice. Brown and wild rice are often not digested by dogs and they will sometimes throw it up. Grease and lard, as part of a dog food, are bad for a dog, period. What is ground fat? Sounds very bad. This sounds like a recipe for pancreatitis and possilby other illnesses if this is what you would be feeding your dog. We feed a home cooked diet to our dogs, but the diet is well balanced and varied, no flour in it, no lard or grease. I would not suggest feeding your dog any homemade dog food without getting it approved by your Vet. I know a Vet would not approve this recipe. Not meaning to be critical, it just seems dangerous as a recipe for dog food- something your dog would consistently be eating.Question about dog food ingredient?
I too make my dogs food and based on the size of this batch you don't really need to substitute the bacon grease. The bacon grease give the mixture a scent that your dog will be attracted to, if you remove the grease you take the chance of your dogs not being attracted to the food. It will also help to bind the mixture, if you are still concerned you could sub half with a low fat margarine, Can't believe it's not butter works well. Suggest that if you use broth as your choice of liquid choose one that is low in sodium. Remember to chop, better yet shred the veggies it will make it easier for your dog to digest.
It's crap. It's ALL grains. This is not a healthy diet for a dog.

Bacon grease/lard is not ok for a dog to eat, and too many eggs. Dogs don't need broth, gravy or milk.

Sounds like you've got A LOT of research to do.Question about dog food ingredient?
You have a diet that would do well for a goat instead of a dog and the only ingredient you're worried about is the animal fat? How about replacing the wheat with a meat? Then drop the oats. Dogs do not need grains.
There's like no meat in this ''recipe'' which is what dogs were meant to eat. I would NEVER feed this to my dog and actually my dog wouldn't eat it anyway because she turns her nose up on grain heavy foods.Question about dog food ingredient?
Cooking oil should do the same thing, and has less saturated fat.
Fats are essential to healthy skin and coat.
I would use it because they need fat in their diet
