RAW/ BARF diet recipe ideas?

I going to put my 16 week old Border Collie pup on a RAW/BARF diet and was wondering if anyone had any good recipes to use? I looked at prepackaged ones like DR-Bs or Complete but they are far beyond my budget plus I like the idea of knowing exactly what is in her food.

What I'm going to do so far is probably use 1kg of mince (will mix it up weekly from beef, chicken and kangaroo), 1kg of mixed veg (put through food processor), offal, 2(?) raw eggs including shell, Cottage Cheese, Cod Liver Oil, Green Lipped Muscle, Olive Oil and maybe some yoghurt?

Plus if you're not a supporter of RAW/BARF diets and want to feed your dogs dry kibble all the time, I can't stop you, but please, you're opinions are not want. My puppy has tried Advantage, Eukanuba and that Natures stuff and I'm not a fan of any of them (especially Eukanuba) and she doesn't like them either. I only tried her on kibble out of financial necessity.

Supporters of RAW, BARF %26amp; Prey models of feeding please fill me in on your wisdom lol :)RAW/ BARF diet recipe ideas?
I feed 80% meat 10% bone 10% organ half of that being liver, an egg every few days, and add some fish oil. I don't understand adding cottage cheese and yogurt when trying to feed natural, they're definitely not natural in a dogs diet. You don't need to add vitamins because they get what they need from what you feed. If you just gave them some chicken obviously they wouldn't be healthy and would be lacking in nutrients but, that's why you feed a certain amount of organ etc.

Add: Are you sure she's just not play growling? If she's not, she needs to be corrected, she shouldn't be allowed to, it could escalate to an actual bite when she's older, and she could end up being euthanised. A change of diet won't stop her from growling.RAW/ BARF diet recipe ideas?
no, no no. wrong. you do not need all that vitamins and stuff. you just need 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ (liver/kidney). do more research here.. i would explain more out but i'm too tired right now.

BARF is not good; it has too much bone and veggies-- stuff that is NOT good for dogs! You want to go Prey Model. Here's facts about it:

80% meat

10% bone

10% organ

And feed it whole, not processed
No supplements. Use training. Correct the dog for growling when the other puppy steps over her. Your dog will know you are in charge of the corrections, and not her. But also keep her safe, don't let the other puppy bother her. In my experience, BC's like to control or police other dogs. Step in now showing you police and not her. Supplements aren't going to stop that until you do :)

IMO, don't mess with mother nature unless there is a reason to! I see no reason for yogurt especially since it's not species appropriate for dogs and most don't tolerate or digest dairy well. If for some reason she needs probiotics (loose stool, antibiotics, etc) then you can buy human grade probiotics for her.

I too follow prey model. BARF is not species appropriate. Dogs are carnivores and have no need for dairy, fruit or vegetables. IMO you are starting off on the wrong foot by researching BARF.

ADD@ BC love: Gizzards aren't organs. They count as meat for raw feeding purposes and shouldn't be included in that 10% organs. Heart, lung, and tripe are also not part of the 10% organ, they should count as meat. While liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, reproductive, and brain are organs for raw feeding :) That may account for your TDs, but I didn't give you one. Any dog can choke on inappropriate or unsupervised bones. If the bone is appropriate for the dog (meaty and size) you can breathe easy but I don't ever leave my dogs unsupervised while they eat.

ADD: So why do you want to add supplements to alter her behavior (not that they will) if you like that she growls at the puppy??

But I don't think any dog should do the correcting, only the owner..if you let her correct you are actually encouraging more fear and lack of trust in you.RAW/ BARF diet recipe ideas?
Hey! First of all, glad I saw this question. I feed my dog the raw diet. He loves raw meat, and he's a puppy. I never cook the meat, and NEVER cook the bones. He has beautiful fur, and he's so happy with his diet! If you plan it properly, your dog will succeed. You should be feeding about 80% meat, which can consist of basically any meat, the best one for a puppy is raw poultry (yes, I know, scary, but contrary to the idiots on Y! A, puppies do not choke on raw bones). There is also raw beef and steak, those are definitely good. You should be feeding 10% Bone. The bones will make your pup's feces nice and firm. You should be feeding 5% Organs (gizzards, basically the organs found in the animal), and 5% Liver. You can get Sandra Bailey's book "Real Dogs Don't Eat Kibble". It explains why commercial food is bad, why the raw diet is good, what to avoid, and what to feed. It also explains how to feed and what to expect. If you need advice, I can help you from personal experience, just send me a message!

If you are worried at all about the bacteria or salmonella in the meat, remember: Wolves survived for thousands of years on raw prey, and guess what? They did great! And the meat does not even stay in the dog's system long enough for the salmonella to affect them, plus, they have a natural tolerance for bacteria found in raw meat. Hope all of this helps!

Yes, puppies CAN choke on raw bones, but I do not know anybody that feeds their puppy raw that has seen their dog choke. Mine has never choked, but again, I do not want to give him the chance, so make sure to watch him the first time you feed him a raw bone, otherwise, it is unlikely, your puppy choking is a worst-case scenario. So, awesome! I am SO glad you want to feed your dog the best! I hope you and your dog are very happy with her new diet, best of luck!

Edit: what's with the TD'S?
I really recommend you order this guy's E Books before starting. http://healthydogforlife.com/ I'm not sure if his paperback books are out yet.

There is a way to switch over to raw, and slow is the key. Fast her for a day or two, and then feed chicken and raw green tripe for a week or two, and slowly introduce everything else. Don't mince it. Leave it on the bone, or as intact as possible when it comes to organ meat, muscle meat, etc. Part of the reason for feeding raw is to develop a dog's jaw muscle and to actually use their teeth for what they were meant for, and eliminate the need for brushing and dental cleanings.

Edit: Third poster..puppies and dogs can choke on food, water, etc. The only way to eliminate this is to not feed the dog or give it anything to drink. My dogs have eaten bones for over 20 years, and haven't had any problems.

Edit: Fasting is a kick start to cleanse the body. The body can get rid of toxins faster while fasting than it can if it has to concentrate on digesting food. It's not going to hurt your dog at all to go without food for a day or so.

As for vitamins not being required, a dog on a proper diet won't need them. Dogs on kibble do, because the kibble is nutritionally void. Dogs in the wild don't need them, and look at how healthy they are.

I would also suggest finding a vet in your area that promotes raw feeding. http://www.holisticvetlist.com/ Because most regular vets know nothing about the subject and will give you a lot of grief.

Edit: To the poster asking about the TDs...probably your comment on dogs choking on raw bones...dogs can choke on anything. Anyway, I think people are probably misunderstanding what you are saying. I think I misunderstood.
