Meanwhile she's just not eating. She's eating perhaps half a meal a day, maybe a full meal spread out but we have to coax her into it. We've tried cat food and meat, both cooked and raw, mince which she usually rips your hand off to get to...
So I was wondering if anyone has cats with similar problems and has some good 'recipes' for food for the cat? Basic or complex are fine.
And please I don't want any answers off people with no knowledge of this illness who think its okay to tell me I'm mistreating my cat when they know nothing about the situation, or people telling me to go and put my cat on a drip when no vets are open.
Thanks for any constructive advice :)Recipes for cat with hyperthyroidism?
Has your vet given you a definitive diet guideline? By that I mean, low/high protein, low/high carbohydrate? Diets for hyperthyroidism generally parallel those for kidney issues (the two frequently go hand in hand), and that is low protein. And, unfortunately, protein and fats are what cats like best, but perhaps she is eschewing the protein because she knows it isn't doing her any good.
I've included some links to site that have homemade recipes. I make about 80% of my cats' food because each of them have specific dietary needs, so search through the recipes to see if any look appealing (or are specifically for kidney issues) and adjust the recipe accordingly.
Here are some suggestions to at least get some nutrition into your cat: canned pumpkin (no spices, just prepared pumpkin). Some cats like it, some don't so it needs a little doctoring with a touch of tuna juice or the like, but in any event, water it down. Pumpkin is high in fiber and has lots of vitamin A. Boil up some chicken breast and make oatmeal with the broth and a little minced chicken (serve warm). How does your cat react to milk? Some cats react really badly, but if yours only gets a little sloppy poop, you can try giving her some low-fat vanilla yogurt (no aspartame) or a tablespoon of ice cream. 'Does your cat like fruit? Try a little mango or papaya. Try and give your cat the moistest food you can. Your cat is going to need added nutrition (particularly taurine) no matter what, so get some kitty vitamins before the pet store closes today. They are pretty big tabs, so I break them up, but they are aromatic and my cats will eat those when they eat nothing else.
When I was discussing the multitude of possible issues with one of my cats, my vet brought up radiocat. He said it is a relatively new treatment that is showing a lot of promise (I've included a link).
Your cat isn't feeling well, so don't force anything, or she will begin to react badly to eating.

To get a cat eating I usually use Kentucky Fried Chicken (skin and bones removed) as it smells the strongest, but if yours isn't going for the chicken then you need to try something else. Most cats are avid for meat baby food--ones with no garlic, just meat, broth, some cornstarch for binding and that's all in the bottle. It's almost a liquid so cats with teeth problems can even take it. I use that after a surgery to get my guys eating again,or when they have an upper respiratory to entice them if they stop eating.
Our Hyperthyroid cat never had eating issues. The medication though was a problem. The tapazole, those little red pills, were almost impossible to get down her. Our vet had the meds compounded, there's a pet pharmacist on the north side of the city who makes this, and when it's compounded it's called methamazole. The cost is the same, $35 for a one month's supply. She's been on it now for 2 years and is completely regulated. The cream is a small dab that goes into the ear twice a day, 12 hours apart. It stings a little bit, but it's far less fuss than trying to get a pill down her!
I can give you the info for them, all they need is a prescription faxed to them by your vet and they do mail order same day. It comes very quickly.Recipes for cat with hyperthyroidism?
It is the disease causing the appetite problem %26amp; until you get the blood work %26amp; the correct dosage of the medication you are floundering. Once on medication the appetite SHOULD return.
Trying the foods she would normally "rip your hand off to get to" is the 1st step. As long as she is eating SOMETHING/anything, it is distressing - not an emergency. When they stop eating completely you need to force feed.
Special recipes are not the answer, finding things that tempt her are.
Fish is not good for cats, but it is smelly... try a little human tuna %26amp;/or pour the oil from a can over some dry food. Shrimp is VERY high in calories, Fancy Feast makes a 3 oz fish %26amp; shrimp (blue can) if you cannot find it try just a *small* can of human grade canned shrimp. Fish %26amp; shrimp are both things that my vet would NEVER recommend, but when you are desperate to get a cat to eat - you try everything %26amp; anything.
Meat flavored baby food (check label - no onion powder) can tempt some cats. I have one that will kill for freeze dried chicken breast %26amp; likes warm cooked chicken breast... she expresses little interest in beef or steak (as a treat).
FTR - I have had 2 cats w/ thyroid problems %26amp; I am on thyroid medication myself.
