I'm a new cat owner and I want to feed the best food possible. After some research I found that feeding your cat raw food is the way to go if you have the dedication. I've acquired the recipes and i'd like to try a chicken thigh first to see how she'll take to it. I read that it's best to grind the bones (for calcium) rather than supplement it. What kind of grinders are out there that will allow me to grind up the meat but the bone as well??
Just looking for something small...apartment use only.
Thanks!Grinding raw meat?
I use the Tasin TS108 as both Lisa for catinfo and Anne from cat nutrition recommend it.
I'll tell you what... you can grind a chicken thigh or chicken leg in abotu 10 seconds... if that. That thing will tear up some chicken bones!
And I must admit... it's kinda fun. :o)
I bought mine off ebay used because they were backordered online but you can get one at http://www.onestopjerkyshop.com/tasin-ts鈥?/a>
For the price... you cant beat it. We have had it for about 2 years now and it has never had a problem and we grind 150 POUNDS of chicken a month to feed out 14 cats. I love our tasin. :o)
(PS... if you shop on ebay... don't get the one that *looks* like a tasin and claims it's just as good. It's not. The motor is smaller and will burn up. :o( That is why they sell them so cheap. Make sure you get the original Tasin TS108)Grinding raw meat?
I looked into grinders eight years ago when I started a raw meat diet with my cats. The only one for home use would only grind chicken bones and they wouldn't do turkey bones. I wanted my cats to have more than one protein source for their nutrition so I went with using ground meat and a supplement powder for the calcium.
The best course for you is to join a Yahoo group of raw feeders and ask your question. I haven't been on one for many years so can't tell you the exact names. Someone may come up with that information here and you can converse with a lot of people who feed cats raw and may have the best answer for your question.
in response, cats are obligate carnivores anyway; feeding it raw meat does not cause it to bite humans. there is a low end grinder that clamps to the kitchen counter that you turn the crank by hand, comes with several different blades. . . like they used to have before food processors. .. don't know if you can still find them, but they could grind chicken bonesGrinding raw meat?
I can't make a personal recommendation but I dug up my initial research and found this:
Grinding Info and Recipes:
www.catnutrition.org/supplies.html - A list of things to get if planning on grinding.
Products to buy:
Grinder: Tasin TS108, or American Eagle. Needs to be able to grind meat and bone.
See www.northcoastmarines.com/barf_hardware.鈥?for grinders and supplies.
I would recommend using the highest quality human-grade bone meal instead, it's just as good and far easier to digest.Grinding raw meat?
i wouldn't recommend you feed it raw meat...due to the digestive track.
I've been grinding for over a year now (closer to a year and a half) with a Tasin. I bought mine, and have had no problems, but several people started complaining it hasn't held up.. so there are other recommendations.. but I love my Tasin.. I buy thighs, cut the thighs in half (taking most of the meat off and leaving the bone in tact) because a whole thigh wont fit down the shoot of my grinder.
http://catinfo.org/makingcatfood.htm is a great source of info.
as for the raw meat shouldn't be fed because of the digestive tract.. um.. what do you think cats were eating before the invention of kibble?? what do you think wild cats eat? Their digestive tracts were built for raw food and are shorter and more acidic than our own and handle raw food way better than the high carb content of kibble.. sorry.. sorry.. I'm on my soap box again :)
my grinder and all its attachments fit into a milk crate and we store it in the closet.
NO dont give it raw meat that is one way of getting him or her to bite a person give it caned cat food if u give it raw meat it will teach it to be a carnivore and will start bitting people and trust me you dont want that i gave my cat raw meat when he was a baby and now we are both 15 and loves to nibble on me but i dont like it
