I know there are lots of recipes. I know that raw is considered a good diet for cats and dogs, but I am not one who wants to feed my kitties raw food. I have read up on vegetarian, vegan, and regular omnivore and carnivore recipes and am overwhelmed. My one cat might have allergies, and in the next month I will be getting her onto another type of food. I am looking into Natural Balance Duck and Pea, or Venison and Pea formula. This little girl kitty is very picky about food now. She will eat some but not much without treats on top. I did not start out that way. But now, I am trying to figure out what I should do. I am interested in making a homemade diet for both of my cats, and the other one is not having a problem with the food we have. What are the best ideas for a cooked homemade cat food in your opinion?
I personally feed a ground Raw Meat, Bones and Organ based diet to my cats and they are incredibly healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. While scary at first, once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it's a snap to prepare.
Cats are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!
If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are www. catinfo.org , www. catnutrition.org , and www. felinefuture.com/nutrition .
If you would like to try raw with your cats and don鈥檛 want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from www. felinespride.com/products/catfood.aspx . I purchased this myself when I first started and my cats loved it!
Another premade Raw you can try is Natures Varity. I personally have never used this but know many people that do and it鈥檚 pretty easy to find www. naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=15鈥?br>

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their diet must be mostly meat. A good quality dry food is fine, so don't feel like you're a bad owner if you don't personally prepare all your cat's meals. You could probably make your own food, but consider the price of the ingredients. Odds are you would have to buy human-grade meat, which is kind of a waste. Also, it will probably be difficult to find a regular supply of duck and venison.
Please, Please don't feed your cat a vegetarian diet. Cats more then doge are carnivores and need the meat. Ideally pet food companies should can mouse or bird but they won't What I have done because my cat is very picky and won't eat canned cat food, is I give him canned tuna, (which is cooked). I also give him a good dry cat food which he eats during the day and how he gets his needed vitamins and minerals. I know another person who gives her cat salmon (which by the way, my cat won't eat), and dry. Either way both cats are happy, healthy and sassy, which I think is what your after. What are the best ideas for a cooked homemade cat food in your opinion?
When any meat is cooked the natural taurine is destroyed. Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats which they cannot manufacture in their bodies as humans and dogs do. That's why taurine is added to all commercial cat food.
So if you cook meat for your cat you must supplement with a powdered taurine. Lack of taurine can cause blindness and heart problems for cats.
There is a reason few will even try a homemade cat food, because it is so exacting and demanding, and any failure on a trace ingredient might show up months later with a terrible illness with your cat. For instance, mess up with taurine, and perhaps in six months you may have a dead cat, or one severely ill, and irreversible. In addition, the chances for bacterial contamination can be very high.
Cats require a carnivore diet, and nothing less. They are not vegans, nor omnivores although they might steal a piece of your bread.
If you wish to tilt towards an 'all natural'. select a high quality commercial product that will be formulated properly.
The duck or venison variety may have success, as I am aware of others who have had good luck with those types of diets for their cats with allergy problems, and other special needs. But really, the cans must state they are for cats. What are the best ideas for a cooked homemade cat food in your opinion?
boil some chicken, celery, arros and a little garlic together. debone chicken. measure out the broth. add 1/2 of that amount of rice to the amount of broth. cook until done
First of all, the the reply that said dry food is not dangerous is completely wrong. A steady diet of dry food for 13 years killed my kitty- had her so dehydrated and riddled with intestinal cancer I had to put her to sleep . Google it and read up on it. You will be stunned
Cats are carnivores and NEED meet. Not vegetarian. They cannot process corn fillers and veggies like humans and other mammals. AS for making your own, it will be costly and you are runnig the risk of leaving out vital supplements that cats need, like taurine. I know someone who does it and it is laborous. There are great food options you can purchase.
After all my research, when I adopted a new kitty, I made the committment to have him on a raw diet for his health.
It is not as gross as you would , because that is what it is about for us, being gross. We don't want to deal with that and we believe the lies of the advertisements and pics on the bags and cans of food.
My little guy eats Oma's Pride raw. I buy it in bricks for about $7 and it lasts 2 weeks. I section it and freeze it. My cat is in such god health and there is a marked difference in how he behaves versus my kittly who died.
After watching her suffer and wanting to know why I did my research. I only wish I knew about all the cat-food myths before it was too late.
So... your homework: Google "is dry food good for cats" and "the truth about cat food " . Educate yourself
PS: I tried Natural Balance and a few other of the better grade canned foods, my little guy would not eat them...I do mix his raw with one teaspoon of regular canned food because eh is drawn to the scent , but he gobbles hsi raw diet down fast and is satisfied.
